Moving Forward

Much is happening around the world to meet the challenge of global climate change. But it is not enough. We applaud those governments and businesses that are moving forward with innovative programs and policies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but we urge everyone to play a part in this global effort:

  • For the governments of the world, that means working closely with the private sector to determine what can be achieved and when, as well as providing legal recognition for efforts that yield results. It also means making sure that we have an international agreement that is both environmentally effective and flexible enough to encourage the participation of governments and businesses around the world.

  • For business, it means accepting the responsibility to reduce emissions and working to implement appropriate strategies, including conducting inventories and setting and meeting emissions reduction targets.

  • And for citizens throughout the world, it means learning more about this issue and making decisions — about energy use, transportation and other activities — that will help lay the groundwork for change.
President Theodore Roosevelt, in his inaugural address in 1905, told Americans, "There is no good reason why we should fear the future, but there is every reason why we should face it seriously." Looking ahead, we would be wise to keep these words in mind as we consider how to address one of the critical challenges of our time.
