New Jersey Governor Releases Updated Energy Master Plan
On October 22, 2008, Governor Jon Corzine of New Jersey released an updated statewide Energy Master Plan (EMP). The EMP focuses on renewable energy and energy efficiency measures in order to increase energy security, decrease consumer costs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Specific goals include maximizing energy efficiency and conservation through utility-driven programs, reducing peak demand through incentives and the use of advanced metering technology, developing and modernizing electricity infrastructure, and increasing investment for research and job training in the energy sector. The EMP would reduce energy consumption 20 percent by 2020, contributing to the state’s overall greenhouse gas emissions target of 1990 levels by 2020. Implementation of the EMP would also involve the generation of renewable electricity beyond what is required by the state RPS of 22.5 percent by 2020.
